Shameful debaucheries (постыдное распутство) – flagrant treacheries (чудовищные предательства; flagrant – яркий, кричащий: flagrant colours – кричащие цвета; ужасающий, ужасный, страшный, вопиющий /об обиде, преступлении и т. п./) – unheard-of atrocities (неслыханные зверства; to hear – слышать; heard – слышанный; unheard-of – неслыханный) – gave his trembling vassals quickly to understand (быстро дали его трепещущим вассалам понять) that no servile submission on their part (что никакая услужливая покорность с их стороны) – no punctilios of conscience on his own (никакие щепетильности совести самой по себе) – were thenceforward to prove any security (не станут впредь обеспечивать какую-либо безопасность) against the remorseless fangs of a petty Caligula (от беспощадных клыков маленького Калигулы). On the night of the fourth day (в ночь четвертого дня = на четвертый день), the stables of the castle Berlifitzing were discovered to be on fire (конюшни замка Берлифитцинг были обнаружены горящими: «обнаружены быть в огне»); and the unanimous opinion of the neighborhood added the crime of the incendiary (и единодушное мнение /всей/ округи прибавило преступный поджог: «преступление поджога») to the already hideous list of the Baron’s misdemeanors and enormities (к уже мерзкому списку мелких и крупных преступлений барона; misdemeanor – проступок; правонарушение; enormity – громадность; чудовищность; гнусность, преступление).
