He had no reel, nor any inclination to waste time (у него не было ни катушки, ни какого бы то ни было желания зря тратить время; inclination – склонность, предпочтение), and by main strength (и одной лишь силой; main – главный; абсолютный, полнейший: by main force – одной только силой), and swiftly he drew out of the water a flashing ten-inch trout (и быстро он вытащил из воды сверкающую десятидюймовую форель). When he came to the stepping-stones on his way to his hillside (когда он подошел к переправе на пути к своему холму; stepping-stones – дорога, выложенная из камней /для перехода через речку и т. д./), he was struck by a sudden thought, and paused (он был поражен внезапной мыслью и остановился; to strike – ударять, поражать).

 He cut a short pole at the water’s edge and drew from one of his pockets a bit of line and a draggled fly that had once been a royal coachman.

“Mebbe they’ll bite in the early morning,” he muttered, as he made his first cast into the pool. And a moment later he was gleefully crying: “What ’d I tell you, eh? What ’d I tell you?”

“I’d just better take a hike down-stream a ways (мне бы лучше прогуляться вниз к ручью; hike – разг. длительная прогулка; экскурсия; путешествие пешком),” he said. “There’s no tellin’ what cuss may be snoopin’ around (кто его знает, какой прохвост может шататься поблизости; to snoop around – шпионить, выслеживать; cuss – разг. парень, малый).”

But he crossed over on the stones (но он перешел по камням; to cross – пересекать), and with a “I really oughter take that hike (и с «мне действительно нужно прогуляться /туда/»; oughter = ought to),” the need of the precaution passed out of his mind and he fell to work (потребность в предосторожности выветрилась из его памяти, и он принялся за работу; to pass out of mind – выскочить из памяти, быть забытым).

At nightfall he straightened up (с наступлением сумерек он разогнулся). The small of his back was stiff from stooping toil (поясница онемела от работы в наклонном положении: «от наклонного труда»; to stoop – наклоняться, нагибаться; склоняться), and as he put his hand behind him to soothe the protesting muscles, he said (и, положив руку на спину, чтобы успокоить протестующие мышцы, сказал):

“Now what d’ye think of that, by damn (ну, что ты думаешь об этом, черт побери)? I clean forgot my dinner again (я снова начисто забыл про ужин)! If I don’t watch out (если я не буду осторожен; to watch out – остерегаться, быть начеку, проявлять осторожность), I’ll sure be degeneratin’ into a two-meal-a-day crank (я точно превращусь в чудака, который ест два раза в день; meal – прием пищи).”
