1. Musicology’s recognition of J Dilla’s particular role in both the surge of and interest in microrhythms in popular music would take even more time. During the writing of this book, two papers emerged: a 2017 study by Daniel Akira Stadnicki of J Dilla’s effect on traditional drummers in the Journal of Popular Music Education, and a dissertation by doctoral student Sean Peterson at the University of Oregon in 2018 on the Soulquarians that recognized some of the theoretical implications and mechanics of J Dilla’s work.

1. These underground salt mines would be the subject of a play, “Salt City,” written by James’s old friend jessica Care moore and produced down the street from the DIA, at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, in 2019.
2. As of publication, the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation remains in good standing with the IRS as a tax- exempt nonprofit.
3. James Yancey’s tax debt was paid by 2017 and money began to flow to the heirs of the estate thereafter.
