Эпизод с семьей Стайнеров — один из тех случаев, о которых слышали многие медики, но мало кто знает ее в достоверных подробностях. Я был удостоен чести побеседовать с доктором Джеймсом К. Стайнером и услышать из первых уст о том легендарном дне и о создании курсов интенсивной травматологической терапии на догоспитальном этапе. Доктор Стайнер не пожалел для меня времени и рассказал о недавно увидевшей свет книге, посвященной этим событиям. «Свет Луны» (2012), автором которой стал сын хирурга Рэндал Стайнер, подробно описывает и кошмар авиакатастрофы, и упорство его отца, которое привело к созданию принципиально новых стандартов в травматологии. Я был рад поблагодарить Джеймса, хотя и с опозданием: именно он помог мне не пасть духом в тот ужасный день теракта в Сохо.
