Итак, хотя визит Бенедикта XVI в Великобританию в сентябре 2010 года, вопреки ожиданиям многих, оказался исключительно успешным, нынешний понтификат производит откровенно неважное впечатление. На англиканскую иерархию было оказано мощное давление с тем, чтобы она не выражала негодования в связи с недавним предложением папы принять в ряды католического священства тех женатых членов протестантского духовенства, которые покинули собственную церковь в знак протеста против возведения женщин в сан епископа. Однако понтификат еще не завершен, а потому пока мы не можем делать окончательных выводов. Все, что сейчас можно сказать, это то, что папа Бенедикт XVI будет лучше многих своих предшественников и хуже других; и что по прошествии почти двух тысячелетий и несмотря на ту атмосферу агностицизма, которая преобладает сегодня в большинстве стран мира, римско-католическая церковь с ее двумя миллиардами членов [378], составляющими практически половину всех христиан и около ¹/ ₆всего населения планеты, несмотря ни на что, находится на таком подъеме, на каком она не была никогда прежде. Если бы святой Петр мог ее видеть сегодня, он мог бы с полным основанием ею гордиться.
