A little while afterwards the stranger came in again, and brought a strange thing with him like a hurdle, or like the figure II.	Немного погодя опять вошел незнакомец и принес с собой какую-то странную вещь, похожую на ворота и на букву П.
On the crosspiece on the top of this roughly made wooden frame hung a bell, and a pistol was also tied to it; there were strings from the tongue of the bell, and the trigger of the pistol.	На перекладине этого деревянного, грубо сколоченного П висел колокол и был привязан пистолет; от языка колокола и от курка пистолета тянулись веревочки.
The stranger put the frame in the middle of the room, spent a long time tying and untying something, then looked at the gander and said:	Незнакомец поставил П посреди комнаты, долго что-то развязал и завязывал, потом посмотрел на гуся и сказал:
"Ivan Ivanitch, if you please!"	- Иван Иваныч, пожалуйте!
The gander went up to him and stood in an expectant attitude.	Гусь подошел к нему и остановился в ожидательной позе.
"Now then," said the stranger, "let us begin at the very beginning.	- Ну-с, - сказал незнакомец, - начнем с самого начала.
First of all, bow and make a curtsey!	Прежде всего поклонись и сделай реверанс!
Look sharp!"	Живо!
Ivan Ivanitch craned his neck, nodded in all directions, and scraped with his foot.	Иван Иваныч вытянул шею, закивал во все стороны и шаркнул лапкой.
"Right. Bravo. . . .	- Так, молодец...
Now die!"	Теперь умри!
The gander lay on his back and stuck his legs in the air.	Гусь лег на спину и задрал вверх лапы.
After performing a few more similar, unimportant tricks, the stranger suddenly clutched at his head, and assuming an expression of horror, shouted:	Проделав еще несколько подобных неважных фокусов, незнакомец вдруг схватил себя за голову, изобразил на своем лице ужас и закричал:
"Help!	- Караул!
Fire!	Пожар!
We are burning!"	Горим!
Ivan Ivanitch ran to the frame, took the string in his beak, and set the bell ringing.	Иван Иваныч подбежал к П, взял в клюв веревку и зазвонил в колокол.
The stranger was very much pleased.	Незнакомец остался очень доволен.
He stroked the gander's neck and said:	Он погладил гуся по шее и сказал:
"Bravo, Ivan Ivanitch!	- Молодец, Иван Иваныч!
Now pretend that you are a jeweller selling gold and diamonds.	Теперь представь, что ты ювелир и торгуешь золотом и брильянтами.
Imagine now that you go to your shop and find thieves there.	Представь теперь, что ты приходишь к себе в магазин и застаешь в нем воров.
What would you do in that case?"	Как бы та поступил в данном случае?
