Первая крупная эпидемия оспы разразилась среди коренных общин через 15 месяцев после прибытия Первого флота. Появление болезни сваливают на французов или переселенцев из города Макасар, описывая разные способы (в том числе неправдоподобные). Известно, что хирург Первого флота Джон Уайт привез с собой стеклянную банку с вирусом оспы, предназначенную для прививки детям, хотя неизвестно, можно ли было таким образом заразиться.

Местом первого обнаружения коал в Новом Южном Уэльсе часто называют Голубые горы, но это неверно. Коалы упоминаются в одних каталогах Баллока (1810, 1811), но отсутствуют в других (1812, 1817).
