"You had so many photographs about the room in your unregenerate days (у вас было так много фотографий по всей комнате в /те/ ваши дни до перестановки: «непреобразованные дни»; regenerate— преобразованный, улучшенный)," I said, vaguely (сказал я неопределенно/рассеянно).

"It makes me shudder to think of them (одна мысль о них заставляет меня содрогаться). I’ve made them into a huge brown-paper parcel (я завернула их в огромный сверток из коричневой бумаги) and hidden them in an attic (и спрятала на чердаке; tohide)."

"Who is Jane Fowler?" I asked.

Mrs. Tower gave a rueful smile.

"Jane Fowler is my cross."

"Oh!"

She was my husband’s sister (она была сестрой моего мужа) and she married a manufacturer in the north (и вышла замуж за промышленника на севере). She’s been a widow for many years (она была вдовой многие годы), and she’s very well-to-do (и она очень состоятельна; well-to-do — состоятельный, зажиточный)."

"And why is she your cross (и почему /же/ она ваше наказание: «крест»)?"
