The most worthy of careful and in-depth study of the phenomenon of the black myth is the fact that one and the same qualities, equally inherent to all states, in shaping the image of one country are accentuated and pushed into the foreground, whereas they seem to be insignificant and unworthy of attention for the image of another one.

The black legend of Spain is a set of myths and stereotypes that create the image of this state, which is manifested, in particular, in the Spanish public consciousness as one of the aspects of national identity.

This legend was a geopolitical construct created with the purpose of denigration of the rival in the information war, which was part of a larger battle for the redistribution of world resources. As a result, three main myths which formed the basis of the black legend arose: obscurantism and inclination to dictatorial governing; horrors of the Inquisition; the bloody conquest of America. These fundamental myths were formed during the war of Spain and Flanders, although the first legends, which were actively implemented in the European public consciousness, had appeared several centuries earlier in Italy, and the creation of myths continued in France during the Revolution.
