About approaches to the investigation of historical dynamics of small mammals animal population

Summary

The report contains typology of dynamic processes within Late-Cenozoic mammal communities paying special attention to those suitable for examination based on paleontological [fossil] remains. Exemplified by the studies of the Late-Pleistocene and Holocene mammals, the author outlines the problems and approaches to solve them in the course the studies performed within the field of junction of paleontology, taphonomy, dynamics of the living populations and ecosystems; the author names this direction of studies as aleology.

The report deals with chronological parameters of the subjects examined by aleology as elementary sample, elementary fauna, elementary oryctocenosis. Rates of accumulation of loose fossiliferous deposits in karst cavities are estimated. Some examples of studies carried out on the sites of the late-Cenozoic mammals from the tundra, taiga and steppe zones are discussed, being accompanied with interpretations of the term «local fauna» and principles used to distinguish different groups of the species within a local fauna. Concepts [notions] of regional and zonal complexes for the Late Pleistocene and Holocene periods are given, and some examples of their dynamics discussed.
