Такой исследовательский подход будет означать не просто расширение существующих границ в теоретическом поиске родового понятия фашизма до ранее неучтенных регионов. Он потребует отказа от телеологического отношения в сравнительных исследованиях, типичного для периода холодной войны и по-прежнему распространенного в науке, которая считает мерилом Западную Европу и регулярно оценивает другие исторические исследования только с точки зрения отрицательных сравнений (например, чего недостает или что «пошло не так» в незападных странах). Вместо того чтобы рассматривать фашистские движения и режимы в этих странах как точную копию их более «подлинного» западного двойника, необходимо попытаться понять сложную систему политических групп, разрабатывавших фашистскую идеологию в межвоенное время и подготовивших радикальный политический эксперимент и на Востоке, и на Западе. Результат внутреннего и внешнего влияния, отлившийся в этот сплав внутренних и внешних факторов, разлитый в разные формы синкретических идеологий, нужно воспринимать как важнейший пример межнационального взаимообогащения нелиберальными идеями и опытом и не рассматривать его как «одностороннее» заимствование из западного политического центра в незападную периферию.
