13 И. Люди чувств[уют] неправоту пути, по к[оторому] живут. Что им делать? Одни умилостивляют жертвами (теория благодати в таинств[ах]), другие считают, что жерт[ва] принесена Хр[истом], как облегчен[ие]. Одна неправд[а] этого та, что невыгодно, для того, чтобы выбраться из грязи, верить, что я вне ее. (Другое дело верить в помощь Б[ога]. Ты к нему на пядень, О[н] к тебе на сажень. Но приблизиться я могу делом, а не верой. Да и веры без дел и нет.) Другая неправда в том, что начинаются толки (как у Павла) о новом Адаме, нового одно[го] никогда нет, а есть всегда старый и новый и всегда борьба, как писал Ч[ертков]. Хитрая борьба вроде игры. И для борьбы нужно прежде всего знать, что есть 2 борющиеся, а потом все внимание, чтоб помогать в борьбе нового А[дама]. А не усыпление в мыслях, что я весь новый.¹⁷⁹

15 И. Кост[юшка] лежит. Собаку. Как поступить? Отношение дурное между детьми и родит[елями] от разврата родит[елей]. Дети чувствуют это. Страшные два примера тщет[ы?] науки и искусства. Спор о Дарвин[е] и Вагнер[е].

18 И. Отче наш. Только к Отцу и к одному От[цу]. Свято для меня только то, что ты — любовь. И вот я буду святить ее, буду жить ею, чтобы пришло Царст[во] Тво[е] и воля Твоя совершилась на земле, как на небе. (На небе она совершается только благодаря тому, что всякое тело повинуется другому (любви). Только не лиши меня возможности служить твоему делу Ц[арства] Б[ожия] тем, что освободи меня от прежних ошибок, мешающих служению. Я же освобождаю всех от обид мне и ошибок их (великое слово освободить других, это не врага, а всякого злодея) и не введи меня в искушенье (тоже, чтобы не мешать твоему делу, я слаб). Дай мне служить Тебе, но не дьяво[лу] себе злому.

2) Движенье вперед идет скачками так: сделают люди улучш[ение] в своем быту и это улучшение увеличит праздность, роскошь некот[орых]. Надо назад идти — отказыват[ься] (аскеты) и отда[вать?]¹⁸³

20 И. К[рейцерова] С[оната]. Думал устроить себе дома бардель, да огонь везде огонь, везде жжет.

21 I. I seldom have experienced so pure joy as I had in reading mr Ballou treatise and tracts. Also very seldom did I feel such love and veneration as I feel to mr. B[allou] and his works.

No, dear sir, I can not adher your opinion that mr. B[allou] will not go down to posterity among the immorta[ls]; he will be one of the first true apostle[s] of the new time and therefore will be one of the chief benefactors of humanity.

If in his long and sometime[s] not succesful carreer mr. B[allou] has experienced moments of depression in thinking that his efforts have been vain, he has only partaken of the fate of his and our master. But I hope that those moments were passage[r]s like thos[e] of the m[aster]. Tell please to mr. B[allou] that his effor[ts] have not been vain that they gave great strength to many people as I can jud[g]e from myself. In those tracts I found answe[re]d all the objections that are made to me and all the true bases of the doctrine. I will endeavour to translate and propagate as much as I can mr. B[allou’s] books and tracts and I not only hope but am convinced that the time is coming. The sole comments that I wish to mak[e] on mr. B[allou’s] explanation of the doctrin[e] is that I can not make concession thet he mak[es] thet drunkards, insan[e] people could be maintained by force or imprison[e]d.

The mast[er] made no concession and we can make non[e]. We must try as mr Ballou puts it to make impossib[le] such persons, but it they are we must use all possible m[e]ans, sacrifice oursel[ves] but not employ violence. And I prefere to be killed by a madman than to ber[e]ave him of his liberty. The application of every doctrine is always a compromis[e] but the doctrin[e] in theory can not make compromises. Alt[h]oig[h] we know thet me never could draw a mathematical right line we will never make another definition of a right line as the shortest distance between two poin[t]s. I will take car[e] to send to you my book on life and would be very glad to know that Your and mr. B[allou] approve of it.

I think that this time is coming and the world is on fire. Our business is only keep ourselves burning that is the business of the remnants of my happy life.

Do you know the book of а чех Chelchistky of XVI century. It is a sermon of true Christianity: It has not been printed till the last y[e]ar. And now [1 неразобр.] is like your mou[ve]ment ignored by nominal christian[s].

Many thanks for your letter and books, pleas tell mr. Ballou that I deeply respect and love him and that his work did a great good to my soul and I pray and hope that I will do the same to others.
