«Масса и власть» (1960) — крупнейшее сочинение Э. Канетти, над которым он работал в течение тридцати лет. В определенном смысле оно продолжает труды французского врача и социолога Густава Лебона «Психология масс» и испанского философа Хосе Ортега-и-Гассета «Восстание масс», исследующие социальные, психологические, политические и философские аспекты поведения и роли масс в функционировании общества. Однако, в отличие от этих авторов, Э. Канетти рассматривал проблему массы в ее диалектической взаимосвязи и обусловленности с проблемой власти. В этом смысле сочинение Канетти имеет гораздо больше точек соприкосновения с исследованием Зигмунда Фрейда «Психология масс и анализ Я», в котором ученый обращает внимание на роль вождя в формировании массы и поступательный процесс отождествления большой группой людей своего Я с образом лидера. Однако в отличие от З. Фрейда, главным образом исследующего действие психического механизма в отдельной личности, обусловливающее ее «растворение» в массе, Канетти прежде всего интересует проблема функционирования власти и поведения масс как своеобразных, извечно повторяющихся примитивных форм защиты от смерти, в равной мере постоянно довлеющей как над власть имущими, так и людьми, объединенными в массе.http://fb2.traumlibrary.net
