Но суфражистки не сдавали позиции, и в 1918 году их многолетние усилия увенчались успехом: британский парламент допустил к голосованию всех женщин старше 30 лет. Во время Первой мировой войны, когда мужчины отправились сражаться на фронт, их рабочие места пришлось занять женщинам. Стало окончательно ясно, что женщины ничуть не ущербнее мужчин и могут приносить обществу такую же пользу. Принятию билля 1918 года в немалой мере способствовала деятельность Национального союза суфражисток, членом которого состояла Миллисент Фосетт. Ее сторонницы обходились без взрывов. Они запаслись терпением и методично боролись за права: Фосетт сравнивала свое детище с ледником, который движется медленно, но неудержимо.

«Ты пойдешь голосовать на костылях, а я встану из могилы и проголосую в саване», – писала когда-то Барбара Бодишон своей соратнице Эмили Дэвис. К 1918 году Барбара была уже мертва, но 88-летняя Эмили все же явилась на избирательный участок, причем даже без костылей. А в 1928 году избирательные права наконец получили все женщины старше 21 года.

Теперь Викторианская эпоха казалась далекой, как сон. Кошмарный это был сон или прекрасный, исполненный стонов портних или веселого смеха разряженных в шелка леди, – все зависит от точки зрения. Главное, чтобы те женщины, которые боролись или приспосабливались, выживали или, устало прикрыв глаза, погружались на дно, не канули в забытьи. Они были такими же, как мы, но при этом завораживающе другими. Из глубины веков до нас доносятся их голоса.
