Not long afterwards I agreed to be searched by two of his officers. Whatever they took from me would be given back when I left the country, I was told. I picked up the two officers and put them into my coat pockets.

They made a list of everything they saw (они сделали = составили опись всего, что увидели; list — список, перечень, опись) and gave it to the Emperor (и отдали ее императору). I later translated this list into English (позднее я перевел эту опись на английский язык). This is what it said (вот, что она гласила):

"In the right coat pocket of the Great Man Mountain (в правом кармане кафтана Великого Человека-Горы) — for so I translate "Quinbus Flestrin" (ибо так я перевожу "Куинбус Флестрин"), we found only one large, rough piece of cloth (мы нашли только большой кусок грубой ткани: «грубый кусок ткани»). "In the left pocket we saw a huge silver box (в левом кармане мы увидели громадный серебряный ящик/сундук) which we were not able to open (который мы не могли открыть). We asked the Man Mountain to open it (мы попросили Человека-Гору открыть его) and one of us stepped in (и один из нас ступил/вошел внутрь; step — шаг; to step — ступать, шагать). He found himself up to his knees in a sort of dust (он оказался: «обнаружил себя» по колени в какой-то пыли; sort — вид, разновидность, род, сорт) which made us both sneeze (которая заставила нас обоих чихнуть/чихать).

Each letter was half the size of our hand (каждая буква — величиной в половину нашей ладони).

"In the left waistcoat pocket there was a sort of tool with twenty long poles (в левом кармане камзола находился некий инструмент с двадцатью длинными жердями /на нем/). We believe the Man Mountain uses this to comb his hair (мы думаем, /что/ Человек-Гора пользуется этим = им для того, чтобы расчесывать свои волосы).
