And his Soul mocked him and said, `Surely thou hast but little joy out of thy love. Thou art as one who in time of dearth pours water into a broken vessel. Thou givest away what thou hast, and nought is given to thee in return. It were better for thee to come with me, for I know where the Valley of Pleasure lies, and what things are wrought there.'

But the young Fisherman answered not his Soul (но молодой Рыбак не отвечал своей Душе), but in a cleft of the rock (а в расщелине скалы) he built himself a house of wattles (он построил себе дом из прутьев; to build (built)), and abode there for the space of a year (и проживал там целый год: «промежуток времени /длиною/ в год»; to abide (abode, abided) — терпеть; проживать, обитать; space — протяженность; период, промежуток времени). And every morning he called to the Mermaid (и каждое утро звал он Русалочку), and every noon he called to her again (и каждый полдень он снова звал ее) and at night-time he spake her name (и ночью он произносил ее имя; to speak (spoke, арх. spake, spoken). Yet never did she rise out of the sea to meet him (и все же ни разу она не поднялась из моря ему навстречу), nor in any place of the sea (и ни в каком месте в море) could he find her (он не мог найти ее), though he sought for her (хотя он и искал ее; to seek (sought)) in the caves (в пещерах) and in the green water (и в зеленой воде), in the pools of the tide (и в озерцах /остающихся после/ прилива; pool — лужа; прудок) and in the wells (и в колодцах/ключах; well — колодец; родник, ключ, источник) that are at the bottom of the deep (что находятся на самом дне глубины /морской/; bottom — низ, нижняя часть; дно /моря, реки, озера/).

But the young Fisherman answered not his Soul, but in a cleft of the rock he built himself a house of wattles, and abode there for the space of a year. And ever did his Soul (и все это время его Душа) tempt him with evil (искушала/соблазняла его злом), and whisper of terrible things (и шептала /ему/ ужасные вещи). Yet did it not prevail against him (и все же она не одолела его; to prevail — восторжествовать, одержать победу, добиться своего), so great was the power of his love (так велика была сила его любви).

And after the year was over (а когда прошел год; to be over — окончиться, завершиться), the Soul thought within himself (Душа подумала про себя), `I have tempted my master with evil (я искушала/соблазняла моего хозяина злом), and his love is stronger than I am (и его любовь оказалась сильнее меня: «чем я»). I will tempt him now with good (буду я искушать его теперь добром), and it may be (и может быть) that he will come with me (что он пойдет со мной).'

And ever did his Soul tempt him with evil, and whisper of terrible things. Yet did it not prevail against him, so great was the power of his love.
