And when she saw that she could in no way escape from him, she began to weep, and said, `I pray thee let me go, for I am the only daughter of a King, and my father is aged and alone.'

But the young Fisherman answered, `I will not let thee go save thou makest me a promise that whenever I call thee, thou wilt come and sing to me, for the fish delight to listen to the song of the Sea-folk, and so shall my nets be full.'

`Wilt thou in very truth let me go (ты на самом деле отпустишь меня; wilt thou = will you; truth — правда, истина), if I promise thee this (если я пообещаю тебе это)?' cried the Mermaid (воскликнула Русалочка).

`In very truth I will let thee go (я действительно отпущу тебя),' said the young Fisherman (сказал молодой Рыбак). So she made him the promise (тогда она пообещала ему) he desired (/как/ он того желал), and sware it by the oath of the Sea-folk (и поклялась в этом клятвой Морского Народа; to swear (swore, sworn)). And he loosened his arms from about her (и он ослабил свои объятия /вокруг нее/), and she sank down into the water (и она опустилась в воду; to sink (sank, sunk) — тонуть, утопать; опускаться), trembling with a strange fear (трепеща в странном страхе; to tremble — дрожать, трястись, трепетать).

Every evening the young Fisherman went out upon the sea (каждый вечер выходил молодой Рыбак в море), and called to the Mermaid (и звал Русалочку), and she rose out of the water (и она поднималась из воды) and sang to him (и пела для него; to sing (sang, sung)). Round and round her swam the dolphins (вокруг /и вокруг/ нее плавали дельфины; to swim (swam, swum)), and the wild gulls wheeled above her head (и дикие чайки кружили над ее головой; to wheel — катить, подкатить; описывать круги, wheel — колесо; кружение).
