He could not forbear another survey of the hill (он не мог удержаться от еще одного осмотра холма; to forbear – сдерживаться; another – другой, еще один) before filling the pan farther down the stream (перед тем, как наполнить лоток дальше внизу у ручья). His elation increased with each barren washing (его энтузиазм повышался с каждой бесплодной промывкой; elation – ликование, энтузиазм), until he arose, exclaiming jubilantly (пока он не поднялся, воскликнув ликующе; to arise – подниматься):

“If it ain’t the real thing (если это не настоящая вещь), may God knock off my head with sour apples (пусть Бог прошибет мне голову зелеными яблоками; sour – кислый; незрелый)!”
