         “Tu’n around an’ tu’n yo’ face

 The clash of steel-shod soles against the rocks began to be heard, and the man’s voice grew louder. It was raised in a sort of chant and became distinct with nearness, so that the words could be heard:

         “Tu’n around an’ tu’n yo’ face
         Untoe them sweet hills of grace
         (D’ pow’rs of sin yo’ am scornin’!).
         Look about an’ look aroun’,
         Fling yo’ sin-pack on d’ groun’
         (Yo’ will meet wid d’ Lord in d’ mornin’

!).”

A sound of scrambling accompanied the song (звук «карабканья» сопровождал песню; to scramble – пробираться, карабкаться), and the spirit of the place fled away on the heels of the red-coated buck (и дух этого места исчез прочь следом за красношерстным оленем; to flee – убегать; исчезать; on smb.’s heels – следом за кем-либо). He was a deliberate sort of man (он был предусмотрительным человеком; deliberate – осмотрительный, осторожный). He took in the scene with one embracing glance (он осмотрел место одним охватывающим взглядом; to take in – смотреть, видеть; to embrace – обнимать), then ran his eyes over the details to verify the general impression (затем бегло осмотрел детали, чтобы подтвердить общее впечатление; to run eyes over smth. – окинуть взглядом, бегло просмотреть). Then, and not until then (тогда, и не ранее «и не до этого»), did he open his moth in vivid and solemn approval (высказал он красочное и торжественное одобрение; to open one’s mouth – заговорить, начать говорить)
