In the multiplied objects of the external world (в размноженных = среди многочисленных предметов внешнего мира) I had no thoughts but for the teeth (у меня не было мыслей, кроме как об этих зубах). For these I longed with a frenzied desire (к ним я стремился с бешеным желанием). All other matters and all different interests became absorbed in their single contemplation (все прочие материи и все прочие интересы были поглощены их единственным созерцанием; to become – стать). They – they alone were present to the mental eye (они, они одни существовали для мысленного взора: «глаза»; present – присутствующий), and they, in their sole individuality, became the essence of my mental life (и они, в их единственной неповторимости, стали сутью моей умственной жизни).

I shuddered as I assigned to them in imagination a sensitive and sentient power (я вздрагивал, когда приписывал им в воображении чувствительную и разумную силу), and even when unassisted by the lips, a capability of moral expression (и, даже когда /они обходились/ без помощи губ, – /я приписывал им/ способность /принимать то или иное/ выражение; to assist – ассистировать, помогать; assisted – получающий помощь; unassisted – не получающий помощи; moral – нравственный; зд.: относящийся к уму, чувствам, характеру).
