Нам нужно (как это нужно, скажем, Сильвио Берлускони) найти то, что будоражит и возбуждает общественное восприятие и общественное воображение. Нам ведь тоже нужны мосты — и на Сахалин, и к Керчи. Без мобилизации на решение общенациональных задач— а это предполагает ясную и правдивую оценку приключившейся с нами трагедии — нас не поймет омский рабочий, да мы и сами себя не поймем. Это — единственное, на что способно наше население. Мы не западные люди-кирпичики. Никакие частные монополии, никакой товарный бульон нас не спасет. Мы, теряя на глазах наш прежний евразийский огромный тыл, стоим у роковой черты. Ослабевает образованность населения, мы все меньше читаем. Мы теряем нашу великую науку и нашу прежнюю потрясающую культуру. От нас уже ничего не ждут, кроме газа и нефти. Будем ли мы на нашем «Титанике», в нашей созданной великими трудами и муками талантливых предков, прекрасной и жертвенной стране ждать, пока волны исторического прибоя не плеснут в наши иллюминаторы? Пока капитан приказал оркестру на палубе играть веселую музыку, чтобы не было паники.
