Мы надеемся, что те, у кого хватило терпения дочитать до конца эту книгу, не будут судить слишком строго древних египтян и их образ жизни. Египетский народ вовсе не был, как полагал Ренан,[*95] стадом рабов под игом равнодушного фараона и корыстных и фанатичных жрецов. Конечно, при Рамсесах было немало обездоленных. И палками тоже тогда злоупотребляли. И все же фараон и его слуги предстают перед нами как живые повелители живых людей. Религия их утешала. И я думаю, что в жизни этого маленького народа было больше хорошего, чем плохого.
