В течение четырех лет моей супруге Джулии пришлось делить наше жилье с Елизаветой, Бёрли, Хэттоном, Рэли, Эссексом, Робертом Сесилом и другими персонажами. Она обсуждала со мной все черновые варианты — порой в два-три часа утра, потеряв счет выпитым чашкам чая. По мере того как приближался срок сдачи книги, ей приходилось жертвовать своей работой. Она научилась терпеть и уважать Елизавету, которая настолько влилась в нашу жизнь, что в это трудно поверить. Совершенно точно, что в 2004 году, когда я работал над биографией Марии Стюарт, я бы ни за что не поверил, что ее кузина однажды станет настолько большой частью моей жизни. За всю помощь и поддержку отблагодарить Джулию я просто не смогу, как не смогу вернуть безвозвратно отнятых мгновений любви и заботы. Те из моих читателей, которые уже привыкли к тому, что в благодарностях я также упоминаю своих домашних животных, будут рады узнать, что Сьюзи и Типпи поживают прекрасно, а недавно к ним присоединилась Мисти. Мы нашли ее у порога — черного, голодного и холодного котенка, брошенного предыдущими хозяевами, но не теряющего надежду обрести новый кров.
