Hot from our walk, we undressed quickly and plunged at once into the water. Six feet from the shore it was thirty feet deep, but so clear that you could see the bottom. It was warm, yet invigorating. When I got out Wilson was lying on his belly, with a towel under him reading a book. I lit a cigarette and went and sat down beside him.

"Had a nice swim?" he asked.

He put his pipe inside his book to mark the place (он вложил свою трубку в книгу, чтобы пометить место /где читал/; inside — внутрь; to mark — ставитьметку, знак; отмечать, размечать) and closing it put it down on the pebbles beside him (и, закрыв ее, положил ее на гальку рядом с собой). "Lovely (восхитительно)," I said. "It’s the best bathing in the world (это самое лучшее /место/ для купания в мире)."

"Of course people think those were the Baths of Tiberius (конечно, люди думают, что там были Бани Тиберия)." He waved his hand towards a shapeless mass of masonry (он махнул рукой в сторону бесформенной массы кирпичной кладки = в сторону бесформенных развалин; shape — форма, очертание; mass — масса; куча, груда) that stood half in the water and half out (что располагались частично в воде и частично над водой; to stand — стоять; находиться, бытьрасположенным; half — половина). "But that’s all rot (но это все чепуха; rot— гниение; разг. вздор, чушь, нелепость). It was just one of his villas, you know (/это была/ просто одна из его вилл, знаете ли)."

He put his pipe inside his book to mark the place and closing it put it down on the pebbles beside him. He was evidently willing to talk.

I did (я знал; I did = I knew). But it is just as well to let people tell you things when they want to (но, пожалуй, лучше позволить людям рассказывать вам что-то, когда им этого хочется). It disposes them kindly towards you (это по-доброму располагает их по отношению к вам; todispose— располагать) if you suffer them to impart information (если вы позволяете им поделиться информацией; tosuffer— страдать, испытывать; книжн. дозволять, позволять;toimpart— придавать, наделять; делиться /мыслями, чувствами и т. п./, сообщать). Wilson gave a chuckle (Уилсон фыркнул: «издал смешок»).

"Funny old fellow, Tiberius (забавный старик, Тиберий; fellow— человек, парень, малый). Pity they’re saying now (жаль, что теперь говорят; pity— жалость, сострадание; печальный факт) there’s not a word of truth in all those stories about him (что нет ни слова правды во всех тех историях о нем; story— повесть, рассказ; история, предание)."

I did. But it is just as well to let people tell you things when they want to. It disposes them kindly towards you if you suffer them to impart information. Wilson gave a chuckle.
