We must lock up," said the elder workman.	Запирать надо, - сказал старший работник.
"Very well, come along," said Raskolnikov indifferently, and going out first, he went slowly downstairs.	- Ну, пойдем! - отвечал Раскольников равнодушно и вышел вперед, медленно спускаясь с лестницы.
"Hey, porter," he cried in the gateway.	- Эй, дворник! - крикнул он, выходя под ворота.
At the entrance several people were standing, staring at the passers-by; the two porters, a peasant woman, a man in a long coat and a few others.	Несколько людей стояло при самом входе в дом с улицы, глазея на прохожих: оба дворника, баба, мещанин в халате и еще кто-то.
Raskolnikov went straight up to them.	Раскольников пошел прямо к ним.
"What do you want?" asked one of the porters.	- Чего вам? - отозвался один из дворников.
"Have you been to the police office?"	- В контору ходил?
"I've just been there.	- Сейчас был.
What do you want?"	Вам чего?
"Is it open?"	- Там сидят?
"Of course."	- Сидят.
"Is the assistant there?"	- И помощник там?
"He was there for a time.	- Был время.
What do you want?"	Чего вам?
Raskolnikov made no reply, but stood beside them lost in thought.	Раскольников не отвечал и стал с ним рядом, задумавшись.
"He's been to look at the flat," said the elder workman, coming forward.	- Фатеру смотреть приходил, - сказал, подходя, старший работник.
"Which flat?"	- Какую фатеру?
"Where we are at work.	- А где работаем.
'Why have you washed away the blood?' says he.	"Зачем, дескать кровь отмыли?
'There has been a murder here,' says he, 'and I've come to take it.'	Тут, говорит, убивство случилось, а я пришел нанимать".
And he began ringing at the bell, all but broke it.	И в колокольчик стал звонить, мало не оборвал.
'Come to the police station,' says he. 'I'll tell you everything there.'	А пойдем, говорит в контору, там все докажу.
He wouldn't leave us."	Навязался.
The porter looked at Raskolnikov, frowning and perplexed.	Дворник с недоумением и нахмурясь разглядывал Раскольникова.
"Who are you?" he shouted as impressively as he could.	- Да вы кто таков? - крикнул он погрознее.
"I am Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov, formerly a student, I live in Shil's house, not far from here, flat Number 14, ask the porter, he knows me."	- Я Родион Романович Раскольников, бывший студент, а живу в доме Шиля, здесь в переулке, отсюда недалеко, в квартире нумер четырнадцать. У дворника спроси... меня знает.
