Abstract
. This article analyzes those texts by the Austrian writer Josef Roth which reflect or catalogue the traditional professional occupations of shtetl Jews and social marginals, the occupations of Jews in their countries of emigration and in the USSR, and instances of combining professionalism and marginality.
