От набирающей обороты дискриминации страдают все люди, имеющие серьёзные психические заболевания. Каждая трагедия, произошедшая по вине человека, который имеет психическое расстройство, усложняет жизнь остальным больным. Например, в 1999 году, когда мужчина, страдающий шизофренией, убил двух человек в церковной библиотеке в Солт-Лейк-Сити, в течение нескольких часов в психиатрическую клинику «Вэлли Ментал Хэлс» начали поступать звонки от испуганных клиентов. «Они просто рыдали, – сказал представитель медицинского учреждения. – Они боялись, что общественность захочет отомстить им». Считается, что подобные события «отбрасывают на годы назад» усилия по уменьшению социальной стигматизации психических заболеваний в сознании общественности.
