Добавило это самому Локку жизненных удобств или нет, но он так и не женился, хотя в середине 1660-х гг. был почти согласен сделаться духовным лицом, вступить в брак со своей возлюбленной Элинор Парри, перебраться в Ирландию, стать капелланом ирландского лорда-наместника и продолжать заниматься врачеванием после получения соответствующих степеней и лицензий. По какой причине Локк отказался от этой весьма приятной и выгодной перспективы, неизвестно. Скорее всего, не из-за членства в некоей тайной организации, а вследствие требования устава колледжа Крайст-Чёрч, согласно которому занятие должности даже «факультативного студента» предполагало безбрачие.
