Более внимательное (или менее пристрастное) прочтение выявило ошибку Ласлета: в рукописи, найденной при аресте Шефтсбери в июле 1681 г., говорится не о «Mors Gallicus», а о «Mars Gallicus», запрещенной во Франции книге, в которой подвергалась критике внешняя политика кардинала Ришелье. Этот труд был опубликован под псевдонимом в 1635 г.
