По словам Дэвида Армитеджа, по сравнению с предыдущими главами Локк в главе о собственности использовал совершенно иной язык: «Понятия власти и права, свободы и равенства поразительным образом отсутствуют в главе V, ключевыми терминами которой вместо них служат „труд“, „усердие“ и „собственность". Эта непоследовательность в словаре заставляет предположить, что глава „О собственности" была написана независимо [от других частей „Второго трактата"], и Локк вставил ее там, где ему удалось найти место в уже существовавшем рассуждении» (Armitage D .
