I sat up at that (я выпрямился, услышав это: «при этом»; to sit up – садиться, приподниматься /из лежачего положения/; выпрямляться /сидя в кресле и т. п./), for I had been reading about him that very afternoon (потому что я читал о нем в тот самый день).

 ‘But I thought you were dead,’ I put in.

‘Mors janua vitae,’ he smiled. (I recognized the quotation: it was about all the Latin I knew.) ‘I’m coming to that, but I’ve got to put you wise about a lot of things first. If you read your newspaper, I guess you know the name of Constantine Karolides?’

I sat up at that, for I had been reading about him that very afternoon.

‘He is the man that has wrecked all their games (это тот самый человек, который разрушил все их замыслы; game – игра; замысел, план, проект). He is the one big brain in the whole show (он единственный мыслящий парень: «единственный большой мозг» во всем этом деле), and he happens also to be an honest man (и он, как ни странно, к тому же еще и честный человек; to happen – случаться, происходить; оказываться /случайно/). I found that out (я выяснил это; to find out) – not that it was difficult (не то чтобы это было трудно), for any fool could guess as much (потому что любой дурак мог бы догадаться об этом). But I found out the way they were going to get him (но я выяснил способ, которым они собираются отомстить ему; way – путь, дорога; способ, метод; to get – доставать, добывать; поймать, схватить, отомстить), and that knowledge was deadly (и это знание оказалось смертельным). That’s why I have had to decease (вот почему мне пришлось умереть).’

He had another drink (он выпил еще один стаканчик; drink – питье; спиртной напиток), and I mixed it for him myself, for I was getting interested in the beggar (и я сам смешал его для него, потому что я начал заинтересовываться этим малым; beggar – нищий, попрошайка; парень, малый).
