But nothing could keep the king’s son (но ничто не могло удержать королевского сына; to keep – держать, иметь, хранить; to keep smb. from doing smth. – мешать, препятствовать кому-л. делать что-л.) from playing the third time (от /того/, чтобы сыграть: «от игры» в третий раз; time – время; раз, случай). Away he went (он отправился прочь: «прочь он ушел»; to go /went, gone/), in spite of every advice and warning (несмотря на все советы и предостережения: «каждый совет и предостережение»), and sat on the same hillside (и сел на том же склоне холма; to sit /sat/).

He waited long (он ждал долго), but no one came (но никто не пришел; to come /came, come/). At last he rose (наконец он поднялся; last – последний, последнее; at last – наконец; to rise /rose, risen/ – подниматься, вставать на ноги) to go home (чтобы пойти домой). That moment he heard a whistle behind him (в то мгновение он услышал свист позади себя: «позади него»; to hear /heard/ – слышать), and turning (и, обернувшись), saw the giant coming (увидел идущего великана: «великана приходящим»; to see /saw, seen/ – видеть; to come /came, come/ – приходить).

 But nothing could keep the king’s son from playing the third time. Away he went, in spite of every advice and warning, and sat on the same hillside.

He waited long, but no one came. At last he rose to go home. That moment he heard a whistle behind him, and turning, saw the giant coming.

“Well, will you play with me today (ну, ты будешь играть со мной сегодня)?” asked the giant (спросил великан).

“I would (я бы не прочь: «/сыграл/ бы»),” said the king’s son, “but I have nothing to bet (но у меня нет ничего, что поставить /на кон/; to bet – держать пари, биться об заклад).”

“You have indeed (конечно же, у тебя есть: «ты имеешь»; indeed – в действительности, фактически; /усиление/ безусловно, конечно).”

“I have not (у меня /ничего/ нет),” said the king’s son.

 “Well, will you play with me today?” asked the giant.

“I would,” said the king’s son, “but I have nothing to bet.”

“You have indeed.”

“I have not,” said the king’s son.

“Haven’t you your head (/разве/ у тебя нет головы: «ты не имеешь твою голову»)?” asked the giant of Loch Léin (спросил великан озера Лох Лейна), for it was he (потому что это был /именно/ он) that was in it (кто участвовал в игре: «был в этом»).

“I have (есть: «я имею»),” answered the king’s son (ответил королевский сын).

“So have I my head (также и у меня есть голова: «так я имею мою голову»),” said the giant (сказал великан); “and we’ll play for each other’s heads (и мы будем играть на головы друг друга).”

 “Haven’t you your head?” asked the giant of Loch Léin, for it was he that was in it.

“I have,” answered the king’s son.

“So have I my head,” said the giant; “and we’ll play for each other’s heads.”
