Читаем Английский язык с Дж. Р. Р. Толкиеном. Хоббит полностью

The next morning Bilbo woke up (на следующее утро Бильбо проснулся; to wake up) with the early sun in his eyes (и раннее солнце /светило/ ему в глаза). He jumped up to look at the time (он вскочил, чтобы взглянуть, который час) and to go and put his kettle on (и пойти и поставить на огонь /свой/ чайник) — and found he was not home at all (и неожиданно для себя обнаружил, что он был совсем и не дома). So he sat down (тогда он сел) and wished in vain for a wash and a brush (и тщетно мечтал: «желал» об умывании и расческе: «щетке»). He did not get either (он не получил ни того, ни другого), nor tea nor toast nor bacon for his breakfast (и ни чая, ни тоста, ни бекона на завтрак) only cold mutton and rabbit (только холодную баранину и крольчатину). And after that he had to get ready for a fresh start (и после этого ему надо было быть готовым к новому старту; fresh — свежий). This time he was allowed (на этот раз ему позволили) to climb on to an eagle’s back (взобраться на спину орла) and cling between his wings (и вцепиться между крыльев). The air rushed over him (ветер засвистел вокруг него; to rush — бросаться, кидаться, мчаться) and he shut his eyes (и он закрыл /свои/ глаза). The dwarves were crying farewells (гномы кричали /слова/ прощания) and promising to repay the lord of the eagles (и обещали отплатить повелителю орлов) if ever they could (если они смогут), as off rose fifteen great birds from the mountain’s side (когда взлетели ввысь пятнадцать огромных птиц с горного склона). The sun was still close to the eastern edge of things (солнце все еще было близко к восточному краю /гор/). The morning was cool (утро было прохладным), and mists were in the valleys and hollows (легкий туман стоял в долинах и низинах) and twined here and there (и вился там и здесь) about the peaks and pinnacles of the hills (вокруг вершин и остроконечных скал холмов). Bilbo opened an eye to peep (Бильбо открыл глаз, чтобы подглядеть) and saw that the birds were already high up (и увидел, что птицы уже были очень высоко) and the world was far away (и мир был далеко), and the mountains were falling back behind them into the distance (и горы отступали за ними вдаль). He shut his eyes again (он снова закрыл свои глаза) and held on tighter (и схватился еще крепче).

“Don’t pinch (не щипайте)!” said his eagle (сказал орел). “You need not be frightened like a rabbit (не надо бояться, как кролику), even if you look rather like one (хотя вы и выглядите вполне как кролик). It is a fair morning with little wind (утро ясное и ветер небольшой). What is finer than flying (что может быть прекраснее, чем полет)?”
