Then he knocked and said, `Miss Abbott,' and I went in and the door closed behind me.

Just plain Jervie sounds disrespectful (просто Джерви звучит непочтительно; plain — ясный, отчетливый; простой), and I can't be disrespectful to you (а я не могу быть непочтительной к вам)!
