And oh, but it's fun (но, о, это весело)! I have four going at once (я читаю четыре /книги/ одновременно). Just now, they're Tennyson's poems and Vanity Fair (сейчас это поэмы Теннисона и «Ярмарка тщеславия») and Kipling's Plain Tales (и «Простые Рассказы» Киплинга) and — don't laugh — Little Women (и, не смейтесь, «Маленькие женщины»). I find that I am the only girl in college (мне кажется, что я единственная девушка в колледже; to find — находить; составить мнение) who wasn't brought up on Little Women (которая не воспитывалась на «Маленьких женщинах»). I haven't told anybody though (хотя, я никому об этом не сказала) (that would stamp me as queer (а то меня действительно сочтут странной; to stamp — ставить штамп; характеризовать, свидетельствовать /о чем-либо/). I just quietly went (я просто тихо пошла) and bought it with $1.12 of my last month's allowance (и купила /эту книжку/ за 1 доллар 12 центов /на деньги/ из моего содержания за прошлый месяц); and the next time somebody mentions pickled limes (и в следующий раз, когда кто-нибудь /из девушек/ упомянет маринованные лаймы; to pickle — солить, мариновать; pickled — соленый, маринованный; pickled limes — рецепт маринованных лаймов и лимонов привезен в Америку переселенцами из Англии, это оригинальный индийский рецепт, по которому лаймы и лимоны мариновались целиком), I'll know what she is talking about (я буду знать, о чем она говорит)!
