Hereafter I shall write only about work (в будущем я буду писать только о работе; hereafter — ниже, затем, дальше /в статье, книге и т.п./; затем, в дальнейшем, в будущем: here — здесь + after — после).

My re-examinations in Latin and geometry came last week (мои переэкзаменовки по латыни и геометрии состоялись на прошлой неделе). I passed them both (я сдала обе) and am now free from conditions (и сейчас свободна от «хвостов»).

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

I am a BEAST (я — свинья: «зверь, животное»).

Please forget about that dreadful letter (пожалуйста, забудьте о том ужасном письме) I sent you last week (которое я отправила вам на прошлой неделе) — I was feeling terribly lonely (я чувствовала себя ужасно одинокой) and miserable (и несчастной) and sore-throaty (и у меня очень болело горло; sore — болезненный, чувствительный; throat — горло, гортань) the night I wrote (в ту ночь, когда я его написала). I didn't know it (я не знала об этом), but I was just sickening for tonsillitis (я просто чувствовала, что заболеваю тонзиллитом; sick — чувствующий тошноту; больной, болезненный) and grippe (и гриппом) and lots of things mixed (и много еще чего вмешалось). I'm in the infirmary now (сейчас я в больнице), and have been here for six days (и провела здесь уже шесть дней); this is the first time they would let me sit up (это первый раз, когда мне позволили сесть) and have a pen and paper (и взять ручку и бумагу). The head nurse is very bossy (старшая медсестра очень любит командовать; bossy — распоряжающийся, заправляющий всем).

But I've been thinking about it all the time (но я думала об этом письме все это время) and I shan't get well (и я не поправлюсь) until you forgive me (пока вы не простите меня).

Here is a picture of the way I look (вот портрет, как я выгляжу; picture — картина, рисунок; изображение, описание), with a bandage tied around my head in rabbit's ears (с бинтом, повязанным вокруг моей головы, кроличьими ушами; bandage — бинт, повязка; to tie — связывать, привязывать). Doesn't that arouse your sympathy (неужели этот /портрет/ не вызывает у вас сочувствия; to arouse — будить, пробуждать; вызывать, возбуждать /чувства/; sympathy — симпатия, расположение; сочувствие, сострадание)?

I am having sublingual gland swelling (у меня опухоль подъязычной железы; gland — железа, лимфатический узел; to swell — надуваться; набухать, опухать; swelling — опухоль, припухлость). And I've been studying physiology all the year (а я изучала физиологию весь год) without ever hearing of sublingual glands (и никогда даже и не слышала о подъязычных железах). How futile a thing is education (какая ж это бесполезная штуковина — образование; futile — бесполезный, напрасный, тщетный; несерьезный, поверхностный, пустой)!

I can't write any more (больше я писать не могу); I get rather shaky (я становлюсь слабой = я чувствую слабость; shaky — шаткий, нетвердый; слабый) when I sit up too long (когда я сижу слишком долго). Please forgive me for being impertinent and ungrateful (пожалуйста, простите меня, за то что я была дерзкой и неблагодарной). I was badly brought up (меня плохо воспитали).
