And so, with the hooves of his horse hidden by the white mist of the morning, Prince Corum rode out from Castle Erorn to begin his quest.

As Corum reached (когда Корум достиг) the sweet-smelling pines and birches of the forest (душистых сосен и берез леса = сосново-березового леса) a wren began to sing (крапивник начал петь; wren — крапивник, мелкая птица из семейства воробьиных), was answered by the croak of a rook (ему ответило карканье грача), and both fell silent (и оба умолкли; to fall — падать, спускаться; впадать /в какое-либо состояние/, становиться; to fall-fell-fallen) as if startled (как будто испуганные; to startle — испугать, сильно удивить) by the sounds their own throats had made (звуками, /которые/ их собственные горла произвели; throat — горло, гортань, глотка; to make — делать, создавать; вызвать /что-либо/).
