`One evening (однажды вечером) I met some negroes (я повстречала нескольких негров) carrying a heavy palanquin through the bazaar (несущих через базар тяжелый паланкин/носилки). I followed behind (я последовал позади /носилок/), and the negroes hurried their steps (и негры ускорили свои шаги; to hurry — спешить, торопиться) and scowled (и сердито/зло смотрели на меня). But I did not care (но мне было все равно; to care — заботиться; беспокоиться, тревожиться). `At last they stopped (наконец они остановились) at a square white house (у прямоугольного/квадратного белого дома). There were no windows to it (в нем не было окон), only a little door (только маленькая дверь) like the door of a tomb (похожая на дверь гробницы; tomb — могила; гробница, склеп). They set down the palanquin (они опустили паланкин) and knocked three times (и три раза постучали; time — время; раз, случай) with a copper hammer (медным молоточком). An Armenian in a caftan of green leather (какой-то армянин в восточном халате с поясом из зеленой кожи) peered through the wicket (глянул сквозь /задвижное/ окошко), and when he saw them (и, когда он увидел их) he opened (он открыл /дверь/), and spread a carpet on the ground (и расстелил на земле ковер), and the woman stepped out (и /из паланкина/ вышла женщина; to step — шагать, ступать). As she went in (когда она вошла; to go (went, gone)), she turned round (она повернулась) and smiled at me again (и снова мне улыбнулась). I had never seen anyone so pale (я никогда не видела никого с таким бледным /лицом/).
