“You think not (ты думаешь, нет)?” said the Hamadryad’s hissing voice (сказал шипящий голос Королевской Кобры). “Look (посмотри)!” and he nodded his head towards the moving mass of creatures before them (и он кивнул своей головой в сторону движущейся массы существ перед ними). Birds and animals were now swaying together (птицы и животные качались теперь вместе), closely encircling Mary Poppins (тесно окружая Мэри Поппинс), who was rocking lightly from side to side (которая раскачивалась слегка из стороны в сторону). Backwards and forwards went the swaying crowd (назад и вперед качалась толпа), keeping time together (соблюдая ритм вместе = общий ритм), swinging like the pendulum of a clock (раскачивающаяся, как маятник часов). Even the trees were bending and lifting gently (даже деревья наклонялись и поднимались тихо), and the moon seemed to be rocking in the sky (и луна казалась качающейся в небе) as a ship rocks on the sea (как корабль качается в море).

“Bird and beast and stone and star (птица и зверь, и камень, и звезда) — we are all one (мы все едины/одно), all one (все одно) — ” murmured the Hamadryad (пробормотал Королевская Кобра), softly folding his hood about him (медленно сворачивая свой капюшон около себя = опуская капюшон) as he himself swayed between the children (в то время как он сам качался между детьми).

“Child and serpent (ребенок и большой змей), star and stone (звезда и камень) — all one (все одно).”

The hissing voice grew softer (свистящий голос стал тише; to grow — расти; становиться). The cries of the swaying animals dwindled (крики качающихся животных уменьшились) and became fainter (и стали нечеткими). Jane and Michael, as they listened (пока они слушали), felt themselves gently rocking too (чувствовали себя тихонько качающимися тоже), or as if they were being rocked (или как будто их кто-то качал: «словно они были качаемы»)…

Soft (нежный), shaded light fell on their faces (затененный свет упал на их лица; shade — тень; to shade — затенять).

“Asleep and dreaming (спящие и видящие сны) — both of them (оба),” said a whispering voice (сказал шепчущий голос). Was it the voice of the Hamadryad (был ли это голос Королевской Кобры), or their mother’s voice (или голос их матери) as she tucked them in (когда она укрывала их; to tuck in — укрыватьодеялом, подоткнуть одеяло; tuck — складка), on her usual nightly round of the Nursery (в ее обычный ночной обход детской)?

“Good (хорошо).” Was that the Brown Bear gruffly speaking (был это Бурый Медведь, хрипло говорящий), or Mr Banks (или мистер Бэнкс)?

Jane and Michael, rocking and swaying (качающиеся), could not tell (не могли сказать = различить)… could not tell (не могли сказать)…

“Asleep and dreaming — both of them,” said a whispering voice. Was it the voice of the Hamadryad, or their mother’s voice as she tucked them in, on her usual nightly round of the Nursery?

“Good.” Was that the Brown Bear gruffly speaking, or Mr Banks?

Jane and Michael, rocking and swaying, could not tell… could not tell…

“I had such a strange dream last night (у меня был такой странный сон прошлой ночью),” said Jane, as she sprinkled sugar over her porridge at breakfast (в то время как она посыпала сахар на свою кашу за завтраком; to sprinkle — брызгать, кропить; посыпать, усеивать). “I dreamt (мне приснилось) we were at the Zoo (что мы были в зоопарке) and it was Mary Poppins’ birthday (и был день рожденья Мэри Поппинс), and instead of animals in the cages there were human beings (и вместо животных в клетках были человеческие существа), and all the animals were outside (а все животные были снаружи) — ”

“Why, that’s my dream (да это мой сон). I dreamt that, too (ятоже видел этот сон),” said Michael, looking very surprised (выглядя очень удивленным).
