Just then a Stranger-man came along the river, but he belonged to a far tribe, the Tewaras, and he did not understand one word of Tegumai’s language. He stood on the bank and smiled at Taffy, because he had a little girl-daughter of his own at home. Tegumai drew a hank of deer-sinews from his mendy-bag and began to mend his spear.

‘Come here (иди сюда),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘Do you know where my Mummy lives (ты знаешь, где живет моя Мамочка)?’ And the Stranger-man said ‘Um (а Незнакомец сказал Гм)!’ — being, as you know, a Tewara (будучи, как вы знаете, Теварцем).

‘Silly!’ said Taffy (глупый! — сказала Тэффи), and she stamped her foot (и топнула /своей/ ножкой), because she saw a shoal of very big carp going up the river (потому что она увидела косяк очень больших карпов, поднимающийся вверх по реке) just when her Daddy couldn’t use his spear (именно тогда, когда ее Папочка не мог воспользоваться острогой).

‘Don’t bother grown-ups (не докучай взрослым),’ said Tegumai (сказал Тегумай), so busy with his spear-mending (настолько занятый починкой своей остроги) that he did not turn round (что он /даже/ не обернулся).

‘I aren’t (я не докучаю),’ said Taffy (сказала Тэффи). ‘I only want him to do what I want him to do (я только хочу, чтобы он сделал то, что я хочу, чтобы он сделал), and he won’t understand (а он не понимает = не хочет понять).’

‘Come here,’ said Taffy. ‘Do you know where my Mummy lives?’ And the Stranger-man said ‘Um!’ — being, as you know, a Tewara.

‘I aren’t,’ said Taffy. ‘I only want him to do what I want him to do, and he won’t understand.’

‘Then don’t bother me (тогда не докучай мне),’ said Tegumai (сказал Тегумай), and he went on pulling and straining at the deer-sinews (и он продолжал тянуть и растягивать оленьи сухожилия) with his mouth full of loose ends (и рот его был полон свободных концов). The Stranger-man — a genuine Tewara he was (Незнакомец, а он был истинный Теварец) — sat down on the grass (сел на траву), and Taffy showed him what her Daddy was doing (и Тэффи показала ему, что делает ее Папочка). The Stranger-man thought (Незнакомец подумал), ‘This is a very wonderful child (это очень удивительный ребенок). She stamps her foot at me and she makes faces (она топает на меня ножкой и /она/ корчит рожи). She must be the daughter of that noble Chief (должно быть, она дочь этого знатного Вождя) who is so great that he won’t take any notice of me (который так велик, что не хочет обращать на меня внимания).’ So he smiled more politely than ever (и он улыбнулся более вежливо, чем когда-либо).
