‘If you’ll think again you’ll find that I didn’t say anything of the kind. I said that your mother said that you were to scoop me out of my shell,’ said Slow-and-Solid.

‘What will happen if I do (что произойдет, если я сделаю /так/)?’ said the Jaguar most sniffily and most cautious (спросил Ягуар очень высокомерно и очень осторожно).

‘I don’t know (/я/ не знаю), because I’ve never been scooped out of my shell before (потому что меня никогда прежде не выскребали из моего панциря); but I tell you truly (но я говорю тебе искренне), if you want to see me swim away (если ты хочешь увидеть, как я уплыву) you’ve only got to drop me into the water (тебе достаточно бросить меня в воду).’

‘I warn you (я предупреждаю тебя) that your Mummy won’t be pleased (что твоя Мамочка будет недовольна). Don’t tell her I didn’t tell you (не говори ей, что я не говорила тебе),’ said Slow-Solid (сказала Медленная-Твердая).

‘If you say another word about what my mother said (если ты скажешь еще одно слово о том, что говорила моя мама) — ’ the Jaguar answered (ответил Ягуар), but he had not finished the sentence (но не успел он закончить предложение) before Slow-and-Solid quietly dived into the turbid Amazon (как Медленная-Твердая спокойно нырнула в мутную Амазонку), swam under water for a long way (долго плыла под водой; to swim — плавать), and came out on the bank where Stickly-Prickly was waiting for him (и вышла на берег там, где ее ждал Колючки-Торчком).
