 Extract from the log of H. M. fifty-gun ship Hecate in her cruise off the American Main.

“Jan. 26, 1721. – This day, the junk having become unfit for food, and five of the crew down with scurvy, I ordered that we send two boats ashore at the nor’-western point of Hispaniola, to seek for fresh fruit, and perchance shoot some of the wild oxen with which the island abounds.

“7 p. m. – The boats have returned with good store of green stuff and two bullocks (шлюпки вернулись с большим запасом плодов и двумя бычками; green – зеленый; растительный /о пище/; stuff – материал, вещество; продукты). Her head had been crushed by a great stone (голова ее размозжена большим камнем) which lay beside her (который лежал рядом с нею; to lie).

Hard by was a grass hut (неподалеку находилась хижина; hard by – близко, рядом), and signs that a man had dwelt therein for some time (и /имелись/ признаки, что некоторое время в ней жил человек; to dwell), as was shown by charred wood, bones and other traces (что видно по обгоревшим дровам, костям и другим следам). There is a rumour upon the coast (на побережье ходят толки) that Sharkey, the bloody pirate, was marooned in these parts last year (что в прошлом году /здесь обретался/ Шарки, кровавый пират, брошенный в этих краях на произвол судьбы; to maroon – высаживать на необитаемый остров), but whether he has made his way into the interior (но отправился ли он вглубь /острова/; to make one’s way – прокладывать себе дорогу), or whether he has been picked up by some craft (или его подобрало какое-то судно), there is no means of knowing (узнать не представляется возможным; means – средство, способ; возможность). If he be once again afloat (если он снова выйдет в море; afloat – плавающий /на поверхности воды/, находящийся в море), then I pray that God send him under our guns (тогда я буду молить Бога послать его под наши пушки).”
