 He wore a Ramillies wig, all twisted into little tails like a poodle’s coat, and cut so low across the brow that the large green glasses which covered his eyes looked as if they were hung from it. A fierce beak of a nose, very long and very thin, cut the air in front of him. His ague had caused him to swathe his throat and chin with a broad linen cravat, and he wore a loose damask powdering-gown secured by a cord round the waist.

As he advanced he carried his masterful nose high in the air (приближаясь, он задирал свой властный нос высоко в воздух = вверх; to carry – нести, носить), but his head turned slowly from side to side in the helpless manner of the purblind (тогда как его голова медленно поворачивалась из стороны в сторону в беспомощной манере подслеповатого /человека/), and he called in a high, querulous voice for the captain (и высоким недовольным голосом он кричал капитану; querulous – капризный, ворчливый).

“Yes, Sir Charles (да, сэр Чарльз).”

“Have you wine aboard (есть на борту вино)?”

“I have ordered five cases, sir (я приказал /доставить/ пять ящиков, сэр).”

“And tobacco (а табак)?”

“There is a keg of Trinidad (есть бочонок тринидадского).”

“You play a hand at piquet (вы играете в пикет; hand – рука /кисть/; партия, кон)?”

“Passably well, sir (весьма неплохо, сэр).”

“Then up anchor, and to sea (тогда поднимайте якорь и – в море)!”

 As he advanced he carried his masterful nose high in the air, but his head turned slowly from side to side in the helpless manner of the purblind, and he called in a high, querulous voice for the captain.

“You have my things?” he asked.

“Yes, Sir Charles.”

“Have you wine aboard?”

“I have ordered five cases, sir.”

“And tobacco?”

“There is a keg of Trinidad.”

“Passably well, sir.”

“Then up anchor, and to sea!”

There was a fresh westerly wind (с запада дул свежий ветер), so by the time the sun was fairly through the morning haze (так что к тому времени, когда солнце уже совсем пробилось сквозь утреннюю дымку; fairly – довольно; в определенной степени), the ship was hull down from the islands (корабль с острова был уже почти не виден; hull down – с корпусом, скрытым за горизонтом). The decrepit Governor still limped the deck (дряхлый губернатор все еще хромал по палубе), with one guiding hand upon the quarter-rail (одной рукой /держась/ за леерное ограждение; to guide – вести, направлять).

“You are on Government service now, Captain,” said he (теперь вы на государственной службе, капитан, – говорил он). “They are counting the days till I come to Westminster (они там дни считают до моего прибытия в Вестминстер), I promise you (уверяю вас; to promise – обещать; уверять /уст./). “Every inch, Sir Charles (все до одного: «каждый дюйм», сэр).”
