In summary, by using DNA sequence analysis, we have confirmed the hybrid origin of a Vanilla cultivar widely grown in Costa Rica. The analysis of nuclear and plastid genes from the hybrid revealed that it originated from an interspecific cross, with V. planifolia as the maternal parent and V. pompona as the paternal parent. Analysis of four marker compounds from cured beans indicated the extract from the hybrid is similar to extracts from V. planifolia. That a Vanilla originating from interspecific hybridization is being widely cultivated and is reported to have tolerance to Fusarium underscores the potential for hybridization and breeding in developing improved cultivars of Vanilla.
