The proposal seemed to astonish Plushkin, for he sat staring open-eyed. At length he inquired:	Предложение, казалось, совершенно изумило Плюшкина. Он вытаращил глаза, долго смотрел на него и наконец спросил:
"My dear sir, have you seen military service?"	"Да вы, батюшка, не служили ли в военной службе?"
"No," replied the other warily, "but I have been a member of the CIVIL Service."	"Нет", отвечал Чичиков довольно лукаво: "служил по статской".
"Oh! Of the CIVIL Service?" And Plushkin sat moving his lips as though he were chewing something.	"По статской?" повторил Плюшкин и стал жевать губами, как будто что-нибудь кушал.
"Well, what of your proposal?" he added presently.	"Да ведь как же?
"Are you prepared to lose by it?"	Ведь это вам-то самим в убыток?"
"Yes, certainly, if thereby I can please you."	"Для удовольствия вашего готов и на убыток".
"My dear sir! My good benefactor!" In his delight Plushkin lost sight of the fact that his nose was caked with snuff of the consistency of thick coffee, and that his coat had parted in front and was disclosing some very unseemly underclothing.	"Ах, батюшка! ах, благодетель ты мой!" вскрикнул Плюшкин, не замечая от радости, что у него из носа выглянул весьма некартинно табак, на образец густого кофея, и полы халата раскрывшись, показали платье, не весьма приличное для рассматриванья.
"What comfort you have brought to an old man!	"Вот утешили старика!
Yes, as God is my witness!" For the moment he could say no more.	Ах, господи ты мой! ах, святители вы мои!.. " Далее Плюшкин и говорить не мог.
Yet barely a minute had elapsed before this instantaneously aroused emotion had, as instantaneously, disappeared from his wooden features.	Но не прошло и минуты, как эта радость, так мгновенно показавшаяся на деревянном лице его, так же мгновенно и пропала, будто ее вовсе не бывало, и лицо его вновь приняло заботливое выражение.
Once more they assumed a careworn expression, and he even wiped his face with his handkerchief, then rolled it into a ball, and rubbed it to and fro against his upper lip.	Он даже утерся платком и, свернувши его в комок, стал им возить себя по верхней губе.
"If it will not annoy you again to state the proposal," he went on, "what you undertake to do is to pay the annual tax upon these souls, and to remit the money either to me or to the Treasury?"	"Как же, с позволения вашего, чтобы не рассердить вас, вы за всякой год беретесь платить за них, что ли? и деньги будете выдавать мне или в казну?"
"Yes, that is how it shall be done. We will draw up a deed of purchase as though the souls were still alive and you had sold them to myself."	"Да мы вот как сделаем: мы совершим на них купчую крепость, как бы они были живые и как бы вы их мне продали".
"Quite so - a deed of purchase," echoed Plushkin, once more relapsing into thought and the chewing motion of the lips.	"Да, купчую крепость..." сказал Плюшкин, задумался и стал опять кушать губами.
"But a deed of such a kind will entail certain expenses, and lawyers are so devoid of conscience!	"Ведь вот купчую крепость -- всё издержки. Приказные такие бессовестные!
In fact, so extortionate is their avarice that they will charge one half a rouble, and then a sack of flour, and then a whole waggon-load of meal.	Прежде бывало полтиной меди отделаешься да мешком муки, а теперь пошли целую подводу круп, да и красную бумажку прибавь, такое сребролюбие!
