The blood was streaming.	Кровь струилась по телу.
Five times round, six times round.	Пятый, шестой раз обошел.
Suddenly Lenina covered her face shish her hands and began to sob.	Ленайна вдруг закрыла лицо руками, зарыдала.
"Oh, stop them, stop them!" she implored.	- Пусть прекратят, пусть прекратят, - взмолилась она.
But the whip fell and fell inexorably.	Но плеть хлестала неумолимо.
Seven times round.	Седьмой круг сделал юноша.
Then all at once the boy staggered and, still without a sound, pitched forward on to his face.	И тут пошатнулся и по-прежнему без звука -рухнул плашмя, лицом вниз.
Bending over him, the old man touched his back with a long white feather, held it up for a moment, crimson, for the people to see then shook it thrice over the snakes.	Наклонясь над ним, старик коснулся его спины длинным белым пером, высоко поднял это перо, обагренное, показал людям и трижды тряхнул им над змеями.
A few drops fell, and suddenly the drums broke out again into a panic of hurrying notes; there was a great shout.	Несколько капель упало с пера, и внезапно барабаны ожили, рассыпались тревожной дробью, раздался гулкий клич.
The dancers rushed forward, picked up the snakes and ran out of the square.	Плясуны кинулись, похватали змей и пустились бегом.
Men, women, children, all the crowd ran after them.	За ними побежала вся толпа - мужчины, женщины, дети.
A minute later the square was empty, only the boy remained, prone where he had fallen, quite still.	Через минуту площадь была уже пуста, только юноша недвижно лежал там, где лег.
Three old women came out of one of the houses, and with some difficulty lifted him and carried him in.	Три старухи вышли из ближнего дома, подняли его с трудом и внесли туда.
The eagle and the man on the cross kept guard for a little while over the empty pueblo; then, as though they had seen enough, sank slowly down through their hatchways, out of sight, into the nether world.	Над площадью остались нести караул двое - орел и распятый; затем и они, точно насмотревшись вдоволь, неспешно канули в люки, в подземное обиталище.
Lenina was still sobbing.	Ленайна по-прежнему плакала.
"Too awful," she kept repeating, and all Bernard's consolations were in vain.	- Невыносимо, - всхлипывала она, и Бернард был бессилен ее утешить.
"Too awful!	- Невыносимо!
That blood!"	Эта кровь!
She shuddered.	- Она передернулась.
"Oh, I wish I had my soma."	- О, где моя сома!
There was the sound of feet in the inner room.	У них за спиной, в комнате, раздались шаги.
Lenina did not move, but sat with her face in her hands, unseeing, apart.	Ленайна не пошевелилась, сидела, спрятав лицо в ладони, погрузившись в свое страдание.
Only Bernard turned round.	Бернард оглянулся.
