Этим примером заканчивается готический период, и мы начнем новую серию о Ренессансе, в которой станет ясно, что художники обращались за вдохновением к тому же самому источнику, что и люди готики, и происходило это тем же самым образом. Во времена упадка Римской империи на Западе различные племена перенимали ее архитектуру и развивали главный стиль, который сейчас мы называем романским и от которого пошел наш собственный нормандский. В 1453 году, когда турки захватили Константинополь, в котором нашла продолжение римская классическая традиция, эмиграция, последовавшая за захватом, перенесла ту же самую классическую традицию в Италию. Именно в Италии начался Ренессанс, или Возрождение греческих и римских форм в искусстве и литературе. Новое движение пересекло Францию и проявило себя в Англии во времена правления Генриха VIII. Таким образом, нашей задачей в следующем цикле является показ того, как это повлияло на повседневные вещи со времен Тюдоров до конца XVIII века[106].
