Локк встретился с Лимборхом в январе 1684 г., завязав знакомство через Петера Генелона, благодаря которому получил убежище в доме тестя Генелона – доктора Эгберта Вина. У Вина, к которому Локк переехал из дома Якоба ван дер Вельде, книготорговца и покровителя английских беженцев, он и жил в первые два года своей голландской ссылки. Возможно, стоит добавить, что жена Вина была внучкой Якоба Арминия. Филипп ван Лимборх родился в 1632 г. в Амстердаме. Внучатый племянник Симона Епископия, он был учеником Герарда Фоссия и Этьена де Курселя. В 1657 г. получил назначение пастором в Гауду, а в 1667 г. в Амстердам, где год спустя занял кресло профессора теологии Ремонстрантской семинарии. Лимборх – издатель трудов Епископия (1661) и де Курселя (1675); автор труда «Theologia Christiana ad praxin pietatis ас promotionem pacis Christianae unice directa» (1686) – наиболее полного на тот момент изложения арминианской теологии; а также получившего европейскую известность и включенного в 1694 г. в ватиканский индекс запрещенных книг трактата по истории инквизиции – «Inquisitionis, cui subjungitur Liber sententiarum Inquisitionis Tholosanae ab anno Christi 1307 ad annum 1323» (1692). Лимборх переписывался с Ралфом Кедвортом и стал одним из ближайших друзей и корреспондентов Локка, благодаря которому тот познакомился с идеями и трудами ремонстрантов, прежде всего с рукописью «Theologia Christiana», последние четыре главы которой посвящены вопросам толерантности. В ближайший круг Лимборха входил и Жан Ле Клерк.
