The cowboy looked around (пастух осмотрелся: «взглянул вокруг»), and saw a five-headed giant pushing through the trees (и увидел пятиголового великана, продирающегося сквозь деревья; to push – толкать, пихать; проталкиваться); and soon he was before him (и вскоре тот: «он» оказался перед ним).

“Poor miserable creature (несчастное жалкое существо; poor – бедный, неимущий; бедный, несчастный),” said the giant (сказал великан); but weren’t you impudent (ну не был ли ты /настолько/ дерзким) to come to my land (чтобы прийти в мои владения) and trouble me in this way (и побеспокоить меня вот так: «таким образом»; way – путь, дорога; способ, образ действия)? You’re too big for one bite (ты слишком большой для одного укуса; bite – укус, кусание; кусок /пищи/, легкая закуска), and too small for two (и слишком мал для двух). I don’t know what to do (я не знаю, что же делать) but tear you to pieces (кроме как разорвать тебя на кусочки).”

 “Poor miserable creature,” said the giant; but weren’t you impudent to come to my land and trouble me in this way? You’re too big for one bite, and too small for two. I don’t know what to do but tear you to pieces.”

“You nasty brute (/ах/ ты, мерзкая скотина; nasty – неприятный, противный; мерзкий, гадкий, гнусный),” said the cowboy (сказал пастух), coming down to him from the tree (спускаясь к нему с дерева), “’t is little I care for you (плевать я на тебя хотел: «мало я беспокоюсь из-за тебя»; ’t = it; to care – заботиться /о ком-л., чем-л./, ухаживать; беспокоиться, тревожиться, волноваться),” and then they went at each other (и тогда они бросились друг на друга; to go at smb. – набрасываться, бросаться на кого-л.). So great was the noise between them (столь велик был грохот, издаваемый ими: «между ними») that there was nothing in the world (что в мире не было никого: «ничего не было в мире») but what was looking on and listening to the combat (кто бы /не/ смотрел и /не/ прислушивался к этому поединку; to listen – слушать; прислушиваться; combat – бой, сражение; дуэль, поединок).
