He took these down (он снял их; to take /took, taken/), caught the Gruagach (схватил Груагаха; to catch /caught/), fastened his two hands behind him (связал ему обе руки за спиной: «связал его две руки позади него»), and tied his feet (и связал его ноги) so that his little toes were whispering to his ears (так, что его мизинцы оказались прямо у его ушей: «шептались с его ушами»; toe – палец ноги; little – маленький, небольшой /о размере/; little toe – мизинец). When he was in this state (когда он был = оказавшись в этом положении) the Gruagach said (Груагах сказал),

“I’ll tell you what stopped my laughing (я расскажу тебе, что положило конец моему смеху; to stop – останавливать, задерживать; прекращать, кончать) if you set me free (если ты меня освободишь; to set – ставить, помещать, класть; привести в какое-л. состояние; free – свободный, независимый; находящийся на свободе, свободный; to set free – освобождать).”

 He took these down, caught the Gruagach, fastened his two hands behind him, and tied his feet so that his little toes were whispering to his ears. When he was in this state the Gruagach said,

“I’ll tell you what stopped my laughing if you set me free.”

So the cowboy unbound him (тогда пастух развязал его; to bind /bound/ – связывать; to unbind /unbound/ – развязывать), the two sat down together (они присели вдвоем: «двое сели вместе»; to sit /sat/), and the Gruagach said (и Груагах сказал), “I lived in this castle here with my twelve sons (я жил здесь, в этом замке, со своими двенадцатью сыновьями). We ate (мы ели; to eat /ate, eaten/), drank (пили; to drink /drank, drunk/), played cards (играли в карты), and enjoyed ourselves (и нам было весело; to enjoy – наслаждаться, получать удовольствие /от чего-л./; веселиться, хорошо проводить время), till one day when my sons and I were playing (до того дня, когда мои сыновья и я /сидели/ играли /в карты/), a wizard hare came rushing in (и примчался заколдованный заяц; wizard – колдун, чародей; колдовской; to rush – бросаться, кидаться; мчаться, нестись), jumped on our table (запрыгнул на наш стол), defiled it (запачкал его; to defile – понижать качество, портить; делать грязным, пачкать, марать), and ran away (и убежал прочь; to run /ran, run/).

 So the cowboy unbound him, the two sat down together, and the Gruagach said, “I lived in this castle here with my twelve sons. We ate, drank, played cards, and enjoyed ourselves, till one day when my sons and I were playing, a wizard hare came rushing in, jumped on our table, defiled it, and ran away.
